Sunday, February 25^th at 4 p.m. the Underground Music Series celebrates Max Colley III’s new recording “Jubilee” with a concert including Max on trumpet, Michigan State University’s Diego Rivera on saxophones, Luther Allison at the piano, Liany Mateo on bass and Western Michigan University’s Keith Hall playing drums. 2017 marked the 100 year anniversary of Dizzy Gillespie’s birth, and social media was frowning over a perceived lack of Gillespie’s influence in today’s music. Wait a minute! On this new album “Jubilee” Max Colley III plays Dizzy’s composition “Tour De Force” with Gillespie’s principle protégé, now master musician in his own right, Jon Faddis. The legacy of Dizzy, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, in fact the entire history of jazz, is addressed on “Jubilee,” which features over 33 musicians ranging in age from 20 to 87 years old.

Adventuremusic.org is proud to introduce you to Max’s most ambitious recording project to date, a set including guest appearances by the last surviving member of Miles Davis’s “Kind of Blue” sextet, and National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, drummer Jimmy Cobb, as well as an array of local and “Big Apple” musicians.

A native of Grand Rapids, son of all-star music educator Max Colley Jr., Max Colley III was a member of the 1987 McDonalds All-American Band and Jazz Band. Max has performed for three presidents. Today he is the Jazz Events Coordinator at Michigan State University.
